  • The 31st of October is observed as the birthday of Sardar Ballavbhai Patel and it has been named as the National Unity Day due to his contribution in unifying the country at the time of independence of the country after India and Pakistan got divided in 1947
  • The Union Government celebrated the 140th Birth Anniversary of the leader with a number of functions in New Delhi as well as other parts of the country as the PM flagged off the Unity Run at New Delhi today to commemorate the occasion

Shaktikanta Das Nominated in RBI Board

  • Ending speculation regarding the government nominee at the central board of RBI, the government has appointed the Economics Affairs Secretary, Shaktikanta Das in the board after a lot of tussle between the apex bank and the Union Government
  • The government nominates its members in the board of the central bank headed by the RBI governor and four deputy governors. There are 20 members in the central board which is the highest decision making body of the central bank of the country

Sanjeev Mohanty Appointed head of Jabong

  • The online retailer Jabong has decided to go ahead with Sanjeev Mohanty as the next MD and CEO of the company after the present chief will end his tenure
  • The appointment will come into effect from the 01st of December 2015 as the first person from an offline company will be heading the online retailer for the first time in the history of e-commerce business in India

Paul Ryan is the new speaker of the House of Representatives in US

  • Republican Candidate Paul Ryan has been elected as the new speaker of the House of Representatives in the USA after the Republican won a total of 236 votes in the elections
  • With this, Ryan becomes the third catholic in a row to occupy the chair of the speaker in the House of Representatives in USA

Edward Snowden is a Whistle-Blower: European Parliament

  • In a big relief to the NSA-contractor, Edward Snowden, the European Parliament has passed a resolution declaring him as a whistle blower
  • The resolution was passed by 285 votes to 281 as the 28 member countries have decided to go with the resolution that the contractor was not at fault when he unearthed the Prism programme run by the NSA to keep a tab on others
  • The resolution is a non-binding one and with it, the countries have been urged to grant him protection and not to deport him to any third party as per the terms of the resolution

BRICS Nations to collaborate on Science Projects

  • The BRICS countries namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have decided to collaborate in the area of science projects as the countries are planning to set up a fund for this purpose
  • The decision to this effect has been taken in the Moscow meeting of the Ministers of Science and Technology of the BRICS countries and it has been decided that the countries will help each other in the area of establishment of new research institutes as well as fundamental research
  • The declaration has also underlined the need for a joint platform of the countries in this area as some of the developing countries will be immensely benefitted by this

GSAT 15 to be launched on November 10

  • ISRO has decided to launch the communication satellite GSAT 15 from the coast off French Guyana on November 10, 2015
  • The communication satellite will be the third one in the series after GSAT 14 and GSAT 6 respectively
  • The satellites will be helpful in the area of communication as they will control the radiation signals that are used for telecommunication as well as internet communication in the country

Waitlisted Passengers set to get tickets in the Next Train

  • As per the new scheme launched by the Indian Railways, the waitlisted passengers will now be accommodated in the next train on that route if there are vacancies in that train
  • The scheme has been launched by the Railways as the Vikalp Scheme and it will come into effect from November 1
  • Till now, Indian Railways used to return the fares of the waitlisted tickets because it could not get them tickets in the trains of their choice
