NRIs allowed to Invest in NPS

  • In a move that will see the subscriber base of the National Pension System increase further, the Reserve Bank of India has decided to go ahead with the permission to the Non-resident Indians to invest in the pension scheme
  • The investments by them will be treated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act 1999 whereas the investors can make the contributions simply by the normal banking channels or the money maintained in their NRE / NRO Accounts with the Indian banks

Bindeshwar Pathak to receive New York Global Leaders Dialogue Humanitarian Award 2015

Raif Badewi to receive Sarkhov Prize 2015

  • Saudi Blogger Raif Badewi has been chosen for the Srakhov Prize for the year 2015 for his contribution towards the promotion of freedom of thought in Saudi Arab
  • The blogger has been nominated for the prize along with the slain Russian opposition leader Boris Nemostov and the Venezuelan Opposition movement Mesa de la Unidad Democratica
  • The prize winners list has been announced the President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz

John Magufuli elected President of Tanzania

  • In the national elections of Tanzania, John Pomba Magufuli of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) Party, has been elected as the new President of the country
  • The candidate from the ruling party has won over the former Prime Minister of the country, Edward Lowassa who has defected to the opposition after the ruling party refused to nominate him as the Presidential candidate
  • Magufuli has secured a total of 58.46% of votes against 39.9% secured by Edward Lowassa from the opposition Chadema Party

Beti Bachao Beti Padhao to be promoted by Union Government

  • The Women and Child Development Ministry has decided to go ahead and promote the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao Scheme in the country so that women are empowered in the society with proper education
  • The department has tied up with Celltick Mobile Mobile Media India Private Limited so that the scheme can be promoted via its live platform
  • The ministry has decided to reach 100 million customers with awareness abount the scheme through the partnership

Indian corporates can issue rupee-denominated bonds in offshore markets: RBI

  • Reserve Bank of India has given permission to the Indian companies to go ahead with the scheme of issuing rupee denominated bonds in the off-shore markets so that these companies can raise more money from the markets
  • The bonds will not attract any capital gains tax from the investors as per the circular of the Central Board of Direct Taxes but it will not exempt non-resident Indians from paying the withholding tax of 5% on these bonds

Global Tuberculosis Report Published by WHO

  • World Health Organization has published the 12th edition of the Global Tuberculosis Report in the year 2015 as the report shows that there has been considerable progress in the reduction of the disease all over the world
  • The world has achieved a rate of halving the percentage of people affected with tuberculosis compared to the level of 1990
  • In terms of India, the report says that India has also been able to check the menace as the country along with the other high-burden countries, has been able to achieve considerable growth in mitigation and prevention initiatives
  • Effective treatment has saved the lives of 43 million people in the period from 2000 to 2015 with the fall in TB incidence recorded as 1.5% in the aforementioned period

Global Shapers Annual Survey 2015 released

  • In the list, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been placed at the 10th position in the global shapers list

Amit Kumar wins Silver in men’s club throw F51 event of IPC Athletics World Championships

National Draft Aviation Policy 2015 released

  • The Union Civil Aviation Ministry has released the draft of the National Aviation Policy that has been on the pipeline for a long time as the policy was required for bringing required changes in the aviation sector which is reeling under pressure from various legislative problems
  • The policy has provisions related to air fares, airport security, cargo maintenance etc as the policy aims to cap the fares of the airlines between two small cities at a distance of less than one hour within Rs 2500 as well as allowing the airlines to employ private agencies to carry out non-core security activities in the airports
    Regarding the most controversial 5/20 rule, the ministry has not suggested anything as it has been kept open for discussions

NEERI to Examine the Impact of Kumbh Mela on River Godavari

  • The National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI) has been asked by the Bombay High Court to examine the level of pollution in River Godavari during the Kumbh Mela that started in Nashik on July 24, 2015
    The High Court has asked the organization to submit a report before it within December 11, 2015 so that it can decide on the further course of action in this regard
  • The court has also asked the authorities not to release water further from the river as it suspects the water of the river to have been polluted due to the Kumbh Mela
