Condemnation Motion against US Passed in UNGA

  • In an overwhelming support for Cuba, the United Nations General Assembly has adopted condemnation motion against USA, the brain behind the financial embargo on Cuba
  • 191 members out of 193 have supported the resolution moved against the superpower while only Israel supported its ally USA in the hour of crisis
  • India has maintained its stand of protesting against any such embargo on any country in an economy where globalization is the norm and that is why, the country has voted in favour of the resolution and against its friend country USA in the United Nations General Assembly

No reservation in Super Specialty Courses in Medicine: SC

  • Reinforcing its earlier view, the apex court of India, Supreme Court of India has decided to go with merit rather than reservation in case of higher education
  • In a judgment delivered by Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice P C Pant, the apex court has made it clear that in courses like specialization in medicine, the national interest should be kept in mind which asks for merit based criterion in admission to these courses
  • The Court has earlier also asked the centre as well the states to consider this situation and issue guidelines accordingly through Medical Council of India

Najib Shah is the new Director of CBEC

  • Senior IRS Officer, Najib Shah, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Central Board of Excise and Customs, the apex body of indirect taxes in the country
  • Najib Shah will retire in 2017 at the age of 60 whereas he is an officer of Indian Revenue Service Cadre of the 1979 batch

India and France to work jointly on Cultural Heritage Conservation

  • India has signed a MoU with France in an initiative that will see both the sides working together in conserving the written heritage in the National Library in Kolkata
  • The agreement will see both the countries sharing competence, technology, digitization practices so that the process of conservation goes on smoothly in both the countries

Games Secretariat of 12th SAF Games Inaugurated in Shillong

    The sports and Youth Affairs Minister, Sarbananda Sonwal has inaugurated the games secretariat for the 12th South Asian Games to be held in Shillong and Guwahati
  • The games will be in progress from the 06th February to the 16th February 2016 and will see participation from various countries like India, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka etc
  • Out of the 23 disciplines, 8 will be held in Shillong whereas the rest of 15 will take place in Guwahati

Committee to review Research Grants by UGC

  • In the wake of the controversy surrounding the announcement by the UGC to discontinue with fellowship programmes for non-NET students, the government has decided to appoint a five member committee to look into the matter
  • The committee will submit its report by December 2015 and after that the HRD Ministry will take a decision regarding the scholarships granted by UGC to the students who have not qualified National Eligibility Test (NET)

Hockey India and SAI sign Agreement

  • Hockey India has entered into an agreement with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) for a period of three years so that the authority can take the sports back to its previous glory
  • As per the terms of the agreement, Sports Authority of India will promote the game in the country as a tool for youth development and also will try to motivate people to take up hockey as career
  • The agreement has been made in order to make one of the most popular games in the world, one of the most popular games in the country as well

33% Quota for Women in Government Jobs: MP Govt

  • 29th OCTOBER 2015 DAILY CURRENT AFFAIRSIn order to promote women empowerment in the state, the Madhya Pradesh government has decided to allot a quota of 33% to women job seekers in the government jobs
  • The step has been taken by the state cabinet in order to create a type of gender balance in the public workforce of the state and with this, the government has increased the total reservation for women in the government jobs from the present 30% to 33% in total

Asia-Pacific Region Most Disaster Prone: UN Report

  • A report published by the United Nations Asia-Pacific Disaster report has put the red alert in respect of disasters to the Asia-Pacific region as the region has been termed as most disaster prone in the world
  • The study has captured that the region has seen a total of 40% of the total disasters in the world and as most of the disasters are cross-border in nature, the report has stressed the need for coordination between countries to tackle the menace

Freedom of the Net Report 2015 Published

  • Freedom House, a non-governmental watchdog has published the 2015 edition of the Freedom of the Net Report which aims at measuring the extent of freedom available to the citizens of a country regarding usage of internet
  • The report shows that the global freedom percentage of internet usage has declined for a 5th consecutive year
  • In terms of the freedom of usage of internet in India, the report has indicated that freedom of the internet in India is only partially free with a score of 40 in the scale from 0 to 100 with 0 being the best and 100 being the worst

Telangana to Access Cloud Technology from IBM

  • US based IBM has decided to tie up with Telangana Academy for Skill and Knowledge (TASK) in order to provide access to the cloud computing softwares in the colleges and higher educational institutions in the state
