Facebook to tie-up with BSNL to launch Wi-Fi hotspots in India

  • In a boost to the internet connectivity in the parts of rural India, Facebook has decided to launch 100 Wi-Fi hotspots in the country
  • The agreement has been signed between the two companies recently for a period of 3 years with a clause to extend it further to 2 more years
  • The global giant will pay Rs 5 lakh per annum for every hotspot developed by BSNL in the country in the places where it is not commercially viable to provide internet connectivity normally by the state-run company

Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis are WTA Champions

  • The golden Indo-Swiss pair of Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis has won another title in the year as they finished the year as the no 1 doubles team in the WTA rankings
  • In the WTA Doubles finals in Singapore, the duo defeated Garbine Murugaza and Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain to win the 9th title of the year for the pair

VN Mishra, the Archeologist, No More

  • The noted archeologist of Independent India, Virendra Nath Mishra passed away in Maharashtra at the age of 71
  • The veteran archeologist was instrumental in excavations in Bhimbetka in Madhya Pradesh as well as Balathal in Rajasthan. These are known as turning points in the history of Ancient India

New Zealand wins Rugby World Cup 2015

  • On their way to the third ever World Cup title, the black caps have defeated Australia to lift the Rugby World Cup 2015. Before this, New Zealand won the Rugby World Cup twice and the last one was in 2011
  • The tournament was played in England and it was the 8th edition of the tournament that started in 1987 in New Zealand and Australia

World Vegan Day Observed all over the World

  • The 01st of November is observed as the World Vegan Day all over the world
  • The day was first celebrated in 1994 when the then President of Vegan Society, Louis Wallis, announced the celebration of the day as the commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the World Vegan Society
  • The day is observed to commemorate the use of the words “vegan”, “veganism” and The World Vegan Society was also established on this day

Punjab to see Bio-Ethanol Refinery to be established

  • The government of Punjab has decided to go ahead with a bio-ethanol refinery in the state to tackle the menace of wheat and paddy straw burning in the state
  • The practice generates a lot of waste that affects the state a lot and that is why, it has decided to start this project which is estimated to cost Rs 950 crore

Navtej Sarana is the New High Commissioner to Britain

  • The Secretary (West) in the Ministry of External Affairs, Navtej Singh Sarna has been officially named as the next High Commissioner to Britain from India
  • Sarna is a 1980 batch officer who has rich and diverse experience of external affairs of the country and will replace Ranjan Mathai in the critical post specially before the maiden visit of the PM next month to London

India 7th Most Valued Nation in the World: Study

  • According to the report of the Brand Finance for the year 2015, India has been adjudged as the 7th most valuable brand in the world with the country jumping one place compared to the last year
  • The past year saw the brand value of the country increasing 32% and that lifted the country one place above in the rankings that are taken note of while deciding regarding the investments in the country
